Event Description
In conjunction with our Season of Portraits this fall, the Gallery has partnered with the Greater Victoria Public Library to host The Human Library Project.
Initiated in Denmark in 2000, The Human Library hosts a collection of living books: a diverse range of people who make themselves available for informal conversation. Celebrating the unique, creative, and sometimes controversial individuals that shape the fabric of our community, the Human Library will offer an opportunity to “check out” a graffiti artist, a city planner or even a Buddhist monk. Other “titles” include Sustainabilist and Pawn Master.
Preregistration is required. Participation is FREE.
REGISTER NOW - Registration is currently being taken, please call 250.384.4171 X0, or visit the Gallery in person to check availability, and “place a hold” on your book of choice.
For a list and descriptions of available books, please visit the event page online at http://aggv.ca/events/human-library-project. Registration for the GVPL’s program must be done separately.
Inspired by our Season of Portraits, this autumn the Gallery invites you to explore the art of representation of the individual. Old & new and from Far East to West, both exhibitions demonstrate portraiture’s ability to express far more about personal identity than a mere likeness. Two exhibitions deal with this theme directly offering one collection of contemporary Canadian portraits and one collection of historical Chinese and Japanese portraits. A third exhibition offers an unconventional portrait, drawing together art objects and artifacts representing the late artist, composer & philosopher and general cultural icon, John Cage.
